Other Health News - Medieval man munched a much healthier diet

Medieval man ate a much healthier diet than Britons today and didn’t put themselves at risk of heart disease, say researchers.

The average medieval peasant ate nearly two loaves of bread each day, and 8oz of meat or fish (about the size of a steak). Vegetables made up a big part of their diet. And all this food was washed down with weak alcohol, like ale.

Two thousand years later and modern man’s diet is much higher in fat and does not contain nearly as much fruit and veg, which has led to the increase in diseases related to obesity.

The research by Lloyds pharmacy also showed that daily exercise had decreased by 96 per cent. Medieval man would do up to 12 hours of active labour each day, while modern man only does 20 minutes.

Anna Denny of the British Nutrition Foundation told the BBC: “This research highlights how much lifestyles have changed over the centuries.

“Today, the majority of adults in the UK are overweight or obese, but energy intakes (how much food we eat) have actually been decreasing for several decades.”
